Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. One of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas, it’s known for its rugged, remote terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra sheltering polar bears, Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes. The Northern Lights are visible during winter, and summer brings the “midnight sun”—sunlight 24 hours a day.

This phenomenon occurs between 20 April and 22 August each year and is marked by festivals and activities. This entire phenomenon occurs in the areas of the Arctic Circle, and the region with the longest period of the midnight sun is Svalbard.

There is apparently a lot to do in this area which is halfway between the North Pole and Norway. There are activities that seem way too different at midnight. They recommend going on a whale safari or exploring the wilderness. Other than that, one can also go for midnight golfing, cycling, river paddling, or sea kayaking – or maybe just find a quiet spot to fish.

“You’ll find the Svalbard Islands where the polar bears reside. Here, you can really talk about an endless day – the sun patrols the sky in almost uniform circles all summer. From the modern town Longyearbyen, which offers a wide range of cultural activities, restaurants, and bars, you can venture into the wild (always with an armed guide) to explore the islands’ Arctic nature, rich wildlife, and old mining towns,” the official tourism board says.
